Each company will call the various IT positions by other names since each company’s structure will be different from one another. This will partially depend on the size of each company, the job descriptions and who the IT professionals work for and under.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Chief Technology Officer (CTO); he or she needs a vast knowledge base of all aspects of the company’s IT infrastructure. Some of the main duties of the CTO are to set the company’s overall technology standards and practices and make recommendations to offer technology solutions to senior managment. Like the CIO, they need to have great managerial skills to lead the IT team towards unified technology objectives offering solutions to senior management. In larger companies, the CTO usually reports to the chief information officer or the chief operating officer. The CTO should have at least 7 – 10 years of IT managerial experience and should also have a degree in computer science. IT salaries for CTOs in the United States rose 3.6% from 2006 to 2007. The salary range for a CTO is $100,000 to $158,000.
