Network Engineer

This individual typically reports to the Network Manager. In small companies, this title frequently goes by another name such as: Network Manager. In larger companies, there may be several of these individuals working for the Network Manager. They should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and have an electrical engineering background. They should also have professional certifications such as: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE). Employers will look for at least five years of network design, LAN/WAN interfacing, security, Internet protocols, networking infrastructure and server experience. Employers look for this person to have an in-depth knowledge of networking hardware and software. The Network Engineer positions had an increase of 1.0% from 2006 to 2007 and the salary range for this position is: $65,000 – 90,000.

Some responsibilities for the Network Engineer include:
- Deliver high-level support to the network team with regards to networking technology: LAN/WAN hardware, hubs, bridges and routers
- Maintain a secure transfer of data, voice and video to other locations via internal and external networks
- Work with other team members and vendors to implement, optimize and manage the networking systems
- Integrate application delivery solutions for your data center, ensure high availability, accelerated performance, enhanced security and scalability of application and IT server infrastructures for enterprises and carriers
