Candidates looking at positions in Networking such as: network architecture, network engineering, LAN/WAN administration and network managerial employment need to have an extensive background in all aspects of networking technology; hardware and software. They will have-to-have excellent written and oral communication skills to be able to convey to the engineers, architects, and other members on the networking team to manage the implementation of the network systems. These individuals should have experience with network operating systems and other network hardware in order to recommend system enhancements and correct system failures.

Networking positions require very good analytic and diagnostic skills to be able to troubleshoot the many problems that will arise in this very technical arena. Although companies prefer the candidates to have bachelor’s degrees, if an individual has at least 5 years or more of work experience in the networking field, they will entertain these job seekers who have strong networking backgrounds along with professional certifications such as from: Microsoft, HP and Cisco. There is a strong demand for networking professionals that have experience with preventing security breaks. As technology progresses, the need for networking skills will only increase. Additionally, networking professionals help solve those critical network security issues, application performance enhancements and scalable carrier solutions that are tuned to IT departments’ specific requirements.

Network Architect
Very large companies will have several of these people spread out across the US or world. Each will have authority and responsibility for analyzing and designing the network in his or her area of responsibility.
Network Manager
This person is frequently located at each site and is responsible for the function of the network.
Network Engineer
In larger companies, there may be several of these individuals working for the Network Manager.
LAN/WAN Administrator
Frequently the LAN/WAN Administrator is another name for the Network Engineer and can also be a name for a system administrator that takes care of servers that form the infrastructure of the company.
